Wheelchair Rugby League Semi-Finals Take Center Stage This Weekend
As the rugby league season heats up, the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup reaches its semi-final stage this Saturday, with two thrilling matchups set to unfold. The action kicks off at the Allam Sports Centre in Hull, where the Leeds Rhinos will take on the Wigan Warriors, while the London Roosters face off against the reigning champions, the Catalans Dragons, at the Medway Sports Centre in Gillingham.
The Matchups
The semi-final draw has set up the intriguing possibility of a repeat of the 2023 Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final, which took place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on June 1st. The Dragons, featuring international Golden Boot winners Jeremy Bourson (2023) and Seb Bechara (2022), will be looking to defend their title, having already secured the European Club Championship with an impressive 68-28 victory over Wigan earlier this year.
However, the free-scoring London Roosters, who demolished the Edinburgh Giants 100-0 in the quarter-finals, will be eager to crash the party and secure their spot in the final. The reigning Wheelchair Super League champions, Wigan Warriors, will also be determined to avenge their European Club Challenge loss to the Dragons and reach the final, having dispatched the Halifax Panthers 70-32 in the previous round.
Completing the semi-final lineup are the Leeds Rhinos, who cruised to an 86-12 win over the Hereford Harriers to earn their place in the final four. The Rhinos will be seeking to once again overcome the Warriors, just as they did in last season’s Grand Final.
The Final
The 2024 Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final will take place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Saturday, June 1st, with a kick-off time of 2:30 pm. The match will be broadcast live on BBC Sport, and tickets are now available online for the affordable price of £11.
