Veteran Wigan Warrior Embraces Iconic Number 13 Jersey
Kaide Ellis Adapts to Loose Forward Role
Veteran Wigan Warriors forward Kaide Ellis has admitted to the unique challenges that come with wearing the club’s iconic number 13 jersey, as he continues to adapt to his new role as a loose forward.
The 27-year-old Australian, who joined the Warriors ahead of the 2022 season, has already made a significant impact, featuring 62 times for the club and claiming domestic and international silverware. His 63rd appearance will come at Wembley on Saturday, as Wigan take on Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final.
“At the back end of last year, internally, we all knew Morgan (Smithies) wasn’t going to be here this season, so in my mind, I was just thinking, ‘I wouldn’t mind putting my hand up for that shirt’,” Ellis explained. “To get both (the shirt and the role), it was very special, and I knew what it meant before I got it. Getting it, I just want to do the jersey proud.”
Initially handed the number 15 shirt, Ellis has since been tasked with filling the void left by the departure of young gun Morgan Smithies, who moved to the NRL and the Canberra Raiders. Along with the added responsibility of the number 13 jersey, which has been worn by several Wigan legends over the years, Ellis has also transitioned into the loose forward position, a role he has embraced and believes will elevate his performances.
“The role is something I’ve grown into,” he said. “I’ve always been alright with the ball, but playing that middle link role week in, week out is something that I’ve really enjoyed and I feel it’s somewhere I can really take my performances to the next level.”
With the guidance of Wigan legend and current assistant coach Sean O’Loughlin, who himself wore the number 13 jersey for over two decades, Ellis is determined to do justice to the prestigious shirt and cement his place as a key figure in Matt Peet’s side.
As Wigan prepare for their Challenge Cup final clash with Warrington, Ellis will be eager to add another piece of silverware to his growing collection and cement his status as a vital cog in the Warriors’ machine.
