Experienced Rugby League Referee Ashley Klein Targeted by Off-Duty Police Officer

In a concerning incident within the rugby league community, a senior police officer has been placed under investigation, and his son, also a police officer, has been dismissed from the New South Wales (NSW) Police force. The incident occurred during a recent Sydney Roosters-Melbourne Storm match at Allianz Stadium in April, where the home side suffered a defeat.

Ashley Klein, a renowned rugby league referee with extensive experience officiating in the Super League and NRL competitions, was the target of the off-duty officers’ misconduct. Klein, an Australian who began his refereeing career in England, has overseen a remarkable 150 Super League matches between 2003 and 2008 before returning to his homeland prior to the 2009 NRL season.

The incident saw a projectile thrown towards the match officials after the game, which was marked by several contentious decisions. Fortunately, the officials were unharmed, and no objects struck them. However, the behavior of the off-duty police officers has resulted in severe consequences.

According to a police spokesperson, the “probationary constable was dismissed from the NSW Police,” and an “internal investigation into the incident continues.” Additionally, the individuals involved have been banned from Venues NSW grounds, which include the home stadiums of prominent NRL teams such as the Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Parramatta Eels, as well as the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.

The NRL has also issued ban notices, prohibiting the individuals from attending any matches in the competition. Interestingly, a similar incident occurred at a Newcastle Knights game a week earlier, but no action could be taken due to insufficient evidence.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and respect within the rugby league community. As the sport continues to captivate audiences across Australia and beyond, incidents of this nature underscore the need for a safe and positive environment for players, officials, and passionate fans alike.
