Seasoned England Prop Chris Hill Spurns Leeds Rhinos, Signs with Salford Red Devils

Veteran England rugby league player Chris Hill has revealed his decision to join Salford Red Devils, turning down an offer from Leeds Rhinos. The 37-year-old prop, departing Huddersfield Giants, will continue his career with the Red Devils in 2023, as he tells Love Rugby League in an exclusive interview.

Despite being excluded from England’s recent Samoa Test matches, Hill remains committed to representing his country. “I will always be available and will never retire from internationals until I am fully retired,” he states, highlighting his close relationship with coach Shaun Wane.

The move to Salford sees Hill return to the North West, where he previously enjoyed a successful decade-long stint with Warrington Wolves. While Leeds Rhinos were interested in his services, Hill chose Salford, citing the influence of coach Paul Rowley and the enjoyment factor as key factors in his decision.

“There were other options but none as attractive as Salford,” Hill explains. “Leeds were keen, but once I had spoken to Salford and Rowls, it was done straight away. Rowls was a big reason for me to pick Salford, and I know Kurt Haggerty well from Leigh.”

Hill’s commitment to the international game remains unwavering, despite the disappointment of missing out on the Samoa fixtures. “I will always be available and will never retire from internationals until I am fully retired,” he affirms. “I get on really well with Waney, and we can have good honest conversations.”

The veteran prop, who still considers himself among the best in his position, expresses concern over the state of the British game, particularly the lack of sold-out crowds for international fixtures. “It does disappoint me that we haven’t sold out these Samoa Tests,” he laments. “This is the pinnacle of a player’s career, and 15,000 at Wigan when they get more than that against Saints, for us not to be able to fill the stadium is pretty poor in my eyes.”

Hill’s move to Salford and his continued commitment to the England national team will be closely watched as the rugby league community looks to the future. With the Ashes series on the horizon, the seasoned prop’s experience and leadership will be invaluable for both club and country.
