Liam Sutcliffe Set for Hull FC Departure as Rugby League Veteran Explores New Opportunities
As the 2023 rugby league season progresses, veteran playmaker Liam Sutcliffe looks poised to depart his current club, Hull FC, when his contract expires at the end of the year. Sutcliffe, who joined the Black and Whites from the Leeds Rhinos in 2023, has been one of the few consistent performers in a struggling Hull FC side over the last two seasons.
Despite his relative youth at 29 years old, Sutcliffe has already amassed an impressive career, first breaking into the Leeds Rhinos side in 2013 and establishing himself as a key player, even famously keeping the retiring Kevin Sinfield out of the side in his final season in 2015. However, an ACL injury saw him miss out on that year’s treble-winning run-in. Sutcliffe went on to feature in over 200 games for the Rhinos during his 10-year spell with the club before making the move to Hull FC for the 2023 season.
With his time at the KCOM Stadium seemingly coming to an end, several potential destinations have emerged for the versatile playmaker in 2025. The Huddersfield Giants, Leigh Leopards, and Wakefield Trinity have all been identified as potential landing spots for the experienced Super League veteran.
The Huddersfield Giants, in particular, are in the market for one, if not two, centres next season, with the news that star performer Esan Marsters will be joining the Salford Red Devils in 2025. The departure of the evergreen Kevin Naiqama also leaves a void in the Giants’ backline, making Sutcliffe a natural fit to provide stability and leadership to the side.
Similarly, the Leigh Leopards are facing a summer of transition, with several high-profile departures confirmed and more rumoured to be on the way. The club’s need for a reliable centre could see them pursue a move for Sutcliffe, who would not command a marquee salary and would not take up a quota spot in the squad.
Wakefield Trinity, on the other hand, have ambitious plans to transform themselves into a top-six Super League side. With the signings of Mike McMeeken and Tom Johnstone already secured, the addition of Sutcliffe’s experience and winning pedigree could help the club achieve their lofty goals.
As the 2023 rugby league season reaches its climax, the future of Liam Sutcliffe remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the veteran playmaker will have no shortage of suitors as he explores his options for the 2025 campaign and beyond.
