Veteran Rugby League Forward Weighs Super League Move After St. George Departure
Veteran NRL forward Jack de Belin is considering a move to Super League after confirming his impending departure from the St George Illawarra Dragons. The 33-year-old, who has spent his entire 14-year career with the Dragons, has been offered to Super League clubs as he nears the end of his time with the NRL side.
De Belin, who has featured prominently as a loose forward and prop, has racked up an impressive 215 appearances for the Dragons. He has also represented New South Wales in State of Origin and made his international debut for Papua New Guinea in 2023 at the age of 32.
“That’s the thing I’ve got to weigh up as well now. But at the same time, footy careers are a short thing and you’ve got to cash in and make the most of it while you can. It is a lot, it’s a massive move.”
Despite the apparent acceptance of his impending departure, de Belin expressed his disappointment at leaving the club he has been with since the start of his professional career.
“If the club wants you, they’ll do what they can to keep you. At the end of the day, it is a business. I’ve seen some of my best mates come and go. It is heartbreaking at the time but it’s a business.”
With several loose forwards on the move in Super League, de Belin could be an attractive target for clubs in need of experience and physicality in their forward pack. Potential suitors could include the Leeds Rhinos, who are seeking to bolster their pack, or the Warrington Wolves, who have been linked with Huddersfield Giants captain Luke Yates.
As de Belin weighs his options, rugby league enthusiasts will eagerly await the veteran forward’s decision and the potential impact he could have on the Super League competition.
