The Best Halves in Super League 2024

In the 2024 Super League season, there were several standout performers across various positions, including in the halves. We take a closer look at the seven best stars we witnessed in the #6 and #7 roles this year.

7. Brodie Croft (Leeds Rhinos)

Despite Leeds Rhinos’ disappointing campaign, Brodie Croft impressed immensely in his first season at Headingley. The high transfer fee paid for the Australian proved to be well worth it, as his creativity and flair were instrumental in keeping the Rhinos afloat. Croft’s attacking threat is among the best in the division, and his quick footwork makes him a constant danger with the ball in hand. With excellent decision-making, Croft was a key figure for Leeds, who were able to retain him for 2025 despite interest from NRL outfit St George Illawarra Dragons.

6. Marc Sneyd (Salford Red Devils)

Salford’s success in recent years has been heavily reliant on the valuable presence of Marc Sneyd. Since rejoining the club in 2022, the Red Devils have embraced an underdog mentality and dismantled many of their opponents. Sneyd is widely regarded as the best goal-kicker in Super League, capable of slotting the ball over from anywhere on the field. Now 33, the veteran’s rugby league IQ remains incredibly high, and he continues to be a real leader in Paul Rowley’s side.

5. Lachlan Lam (Leigh Leopards)

Papua New Guinea international Lachlan Lam is an invaluable asset for Leigh Leopards. Retaining him for the 2025 season was a massive boost for the club, as they fended off interest from the NRL. Lam’s playmaking ability, agility, and creativity are vital to Leigh’s success, and when he’s not at his best, the Leopards struggle to perform. His knack for creating something out of nothing earned him plenty of accolades, including captaining his country for the first time this autumn.

4. Harry Smith (Wigan Warriors)

Despite facing criticism at times, Harry Smith put in some excellent displays for Wigan Warriors in 2024, particularly in big games and while representing England against Samoa. Calm and composed under pressure, Smith’s kicking game is a significant asset, and the responsibility of being the Warriors’ primary goal-kicker being taken away from him seemed to aid his decision-making. One of many products of the Wigan production line, Smith consistently helps his side get into strong attacking positions.

3. Mikey Lewis (Hull KR)

Mikey Lewis was deservedly named the 2024 Super League Man of Steel, cementing his status as the most consistent performer in the competition. The homegrown Hull KR playmaker was pivotal to the Robins’ success in reaching their maiden Grand Final, delivering game-changing performances and displaying impressive leadership and maturity beyond his years. While Lewis is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic players in the league, there are two other half-backs who narrowly edge him in our rankings.

2. George Williams (Warrington Wolves)

George Williams is a stalwart in both Sam Burgess’ Warrington side and Shaun Wane’s England team, captaining both. The 30-year-old is simply unplayable at times with the ball in hand, controlling games through his exceptional vision and creativity. His short kicking game is among the best in the business, helping to put Warrington on the front foot. Williams’ renowned quick footwork and ability to stifle opponents make him a huge asset for the Wolves.

1. Bevan French (Wigan Warriors)

There’s no debate that Bevan French is the best player in Super League. The Australian ace spent a significant portion of the 2024 campaign sidelined due to injury, yet still tops our ranking. Named the Player of the Match in the World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup final, and Super League Grand Final, French would have been crowned the Man of Steel for the second consecutive year had it not been for his injury issues. Even when not at his best, the playmaker is unplayable, cutting through teams with ease and creating numerous scoring opportunities for his side.
