Rugby League Star Suffers Injury Setback in Comeback
In just his third game back since reversing his retirement decision, rugby league star Sam Tomkins has suffered a major injury setback. The experienced full-back was forced to leave the field during Catalans Dragons’ clash with Huddersfield Giants on Friday night due to a hamstring issue.
Approximately 52 minutes into the Round 21 encounter at the John Smith’s Stadium, Tomkins appeared to pull up as he attempted a “show and go” move. After being tackled to the ground, the two-time Man of Steel recipient received treatment but was ultimately unable to continue, with the Sky Sports cameras capturing him removing the strapping on his knee while sitting on the bench.
“As Tomkins walked off the field, he was visibly clutching the back of his leg, indicating a hamstring-related problem. This was later confirmed by Sky co-commentator Jon Wells, who stated that Tomkins would not be returning to the game.”
Earlier in the contest, the 35-year-old had scored a try for the Dragons, his second since making his comeback after around nine months in retirement. However, this latest injury blow could potentially curtail Tomkins’ return to the sport, with just six weeks remaining in the regular season before the play-offs, which his side are still looking to secure their place in.
At the time of writing, the French outfit were leading Huddersfield 18-10, with Arthur Romano’s early second-half try doubling their advantage. While Tomkins’ injury is a significant setback, the rugby league world will be hoping the veteran can make a swift recovery and continue his comeback in the latter stages of the season.
