Rugby League Enthusiasts Brace for Epic Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final
As the 2024 rugby league season unfolds, the stage is set for an electrifying clash between the wheelchair teams of Catalans Dragons and Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final on Saturday, June 1st. The match, set to take place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, promises an intense battle as the two sides vie for the prestigious title.
Last year, the Catalans Dragons showcased their dominance, scoring an impressive 12 tries to overcome the Leeds Rhinos and end their four-year grip on the Cup. Nicolas Clausells was the standout performer, scoring five tries and contributing eight goals for a personal haul of 36 points, earning him the Player of the Match award. However, his uncle, Gilles, also made a significant impact, scoring two tries and a goal.
Now, the French side will face a familiar foe in the form of the Wigan Warriors, who they defeated 28-68 in the European Wheelchair Club Championship earlier this year. Despite the previous result, Catalans Head Coach Cyril Torres is expecting a tougher challenge this time around.
“Wigan Warriors will be really sharp, they worked hard to get their place in the final by beating Leeds Rhinos,” he explains. “They have a strong team – Declan Roberts has posed us a lot of offensive problems and Jack Heggie will be back, so we’ll have to be strong defensively.”
The Warriors, on the other hand, are eager to make their mark in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final, having secured a 48-30 victory over Leeds to reach this stage for the first time in their history. Head Coach Chris Greenhalgh is relishing the opportunity to face the reigning champions.
“As Wigan Warriors, we are looking forward to an opportunity to again take on some of the best players in Wheelchair Rugby League,” he said.
The 2024 Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with both teams determined to claim the coveted trophy. Fans can tune in to the live broadcast on BBC Sport, while tickets, priced at just £11, are now available online for those wishing to witness the action in person.
