Rugby League Results: York Knights Shake Up Coaching Staff, Sign Experienced Hooker Sam Cook
It’s been a challenging start to the season for the York Knights in the Rugby League Championship, as they’ve won just 3 of their opening 10 games, leaving them 14 points behind leaders Wakefield Trinity. However, the Knights have made a change at the top, replacing Andrew Henderson with Mark Applegarth as the new head coach.
Despite their current league position, the Knights remain within touching distance of the play-offs, sitting 6 points behind the 6th placed Bradford Bulls. The club will be hoping that Applegarth can inspire a turnaround, and they’ve wasted no time in bolstering their squad with the signing of former New Zealand Warriors hooker Sam Cook.
“I’d only ever heard good things about the team, the club, and the city. When the opportunity came up, I was keen to jump at it and give it a red hot crack. I want to bring my experience and leadership to the team and a cool calm head to help the leaders and the team out.”

The 30-year-old Cook has signed a 1-year deal with the Knights, bringing a wealth of experience from his time in the NRL, as well as spells with Mackay Cutters, Newcastle Knights, and most recently, France’s Racing Club Albi XIII. Cook made his NRL debut for the Warriors in 2018 and has now joined up with two of his former teammates, Ata Hingano and Jesse Dee, at the Knights.
York Chairman Clint Goodchild expressed his excitement about the signing, stating:
“We’re excited to add Sam to the squad. He brings experience, presence and versatility. I have no doubt he will have a positive impact on the group as we prepare for the second half of the season.”
With the addition of the experienced hooker, the York Knights will be hoping to mount a strong challenge for a spot in the Rugby League Championship play-offs under their new head coach Mark Applegarth.
