Wigan Warriors Women Make History at DW Stadium Debut

In a momentous occasion for women’s rugby league, Wigan Warriors’ female squad will take the field at the DW Stadium for the first time tonight. For lifelong Warrior Rachel Thompson, this marks the realization of a long-held dream.

The Warriors women open their Super League season against newly-promoted Barrow Raiders (5:30pm KO) ahead of the men’s Round 8 clash with Castleford Tigers (8pm KO). Thompson, the club’s first-ever women’s team signing, is eagerly anticipating this history-making event.

“It’s not something I could even think about it, but it’ll be emotional and it’ll be something the girls are all looking forward to,” said the 29-year-old, who previously captained the side.

Thompson has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the women’s team gets this opportunity to play at the club’s iconic home ground.

After missing the entire 2022 season due to serious injuries, Thompson’s return to the pitch this year holds extra significance. As she explained:

“It’s a great environment to be around… I don’t have to go home, I get to just stay here (Robin Park) and then go to training.”

Wigan women’s head coach Denis Betts, a legendary figure from the club’s glory days, has embraced the challenge of leading the female squad.

“They are great and want to get better, which is what every coach wants and their thirst for knowledge has been great,” Betts said.

This milestone fixture is part of the growing recognition and visibility of women’s rugby league. As Thompson noted:

“It’s getting there, it’s come a long way and I’m sure it’s still got a lot way to go. We want young girls to be able to see something they can aspire to do.”

The match at Barrow will be a first for the majority of the Warriors women, including Thompson. This historic occasion represents the latest step in the sport’s evolution, as rugby league continues to make strides in providing opportunities for female athletes to showcase their talents.
