Wigan Warriors Enjoy Exceptional 12 Months on and off the Field
Wigan, UK, April 2023 – The Wigan Warriors have had a remarkable year, both on and off the rugby league pitch. The club capped off a successful 2022 season by winning the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. This triumph was followed by the Warriors lifting the prestigious World Club Challenge at their home ground, the DW Stadium, in February.
The Warriors’ on-field success was mirrored by their impressive business acumen in the offseason. Wigan made several shrewd signings, including Adam Keighran, Kruise Leeming, Sam Walters, and Tiaki Chan, further strengthening their already formidable squad.
“It’s all about being the best prepared you can be and looking to improve every week as a player,” Peet said. “If you’re going to improve by playing reserve grade or out on loan, to show that you’re ready for that first-team opportunity when it comes, then so be it.”
However, the influx of new talent has led to increased competition for places. Matt Peet, the Wigan head coach, has now acknowledged that one of these recent acquisitions, Tiaki Chan, may need to depart the club on loan to secure more regular game time.
Chan, who joined Wigan from the Catalans Dragons, enjoyed a breakout season for the Perpignan-based team in 2023, making 14 first-team appearances. His performances caught the eye of the Warriors, who moved swiftly to secure his services.
But opportunities have been more limited for the young forward at Wigan so far this season, as he has featured in just three of their nine Super League matches. Peet, speaking to Wigan Today, revealed that Chan may need to be loaned out to a different club to “get the game time he needs and to work his way back into our squad.”
The Wigan boss emphasized the importance of players on the fringes of the squad being ready to seize their chances when they arise. With the returns of key players such as Walters and Ethan Havard from injury, the competition for places in the Warriors’ lineup has intensified.
The Warriors’ successful 2022 campaign and their subsequent off-season recruitment have set high expectations for the club. As they navigate the challenges of a packed Super League schedule, Wigan’s coaching staff will be tasked with managing their talented roster and ensuring all players are given the opportunity to contribute to the team’s continued success.
