Rugby League Discipline Takes Center Stage as Wigan Warriors Face Card Challenges
Wigan Warriors have found themselves in the spotlight for disciplinary issues in the 2024 Super League season, having received the fourth-most cards in the league so far.
The dismissal of Australian center Adam Keighran against Warrington Wolves last Saturday was the second red card shown to a Warriors player this year, following Liam Byrne’s early exit in their Good Friday defeat to St Helens. Combined with the five yellow cards Matt Peet’s side has accumulated over their 12 Super League games, Wigan’s card tally now stands at seven.
Compared to most other clubs, who have played one more match, Wigan’s recent ill-discipline stands out, a contrast to their reputation as one of the better-disciplined teams under Peet’s leadership in recent years.
The Wider Super League Landscape
The wider Super League landscape has also seen a significant number of red cards this season, with more than half of the clubs experiencing at least one player dismissal by Round 10. Only five teams are yet to receive a red card, including Leigh Leopards and Leeds Rhinos, while Castleford Tigers remain the sole club without a single yellow card.

However, it is Hull FC who top the overall card table, having been shown eight yellow cards and three red cards so far – a total of 11 disciplinary infractions. Leigh Leopards and Salford Red Devils trail closely behind on 10 cards each.
Maintaining Composure
As the Super League season progresses, the focus on disciplinary records will continue, with teams striving to maintain their composure and avoid the costly consequences of ill-timed cards. Wigan Warriors, in particular, will be determined to address their recent spike in cards and return to their traditionally well-disciplined style of play.
