Warrington Wolves Bolster Roster with Signing of Tackling Sensation Luke Yates
Warrington Wolves have been making waves in the 2024 rugby league season under the guidance of head coach Sam Burgess, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down. The club has announced the signing of Huddersfield Giants captain Luke Yates, securing the services of one of the most consistent and prolific forwards in the Super League.
Yates, an Australian international, has been a standout performer in recent years, even earning the coveted Top Tackler award in 2023 for recording the most tackles throughout the Super League campaign. Despite missing the first three matches of the current season, the 29-year-old has continued his impressive form, amassing 366 tackles in just nine games – an average of over 40 per outing, placing him among the league’s top tacklers.
“Warrington Wolves have long been linked with Yates, and they have now officially confirmed his acquisition on a two-year deal starting from the 2025 season. In a statement, the club expressed its delight at securing the signing, describing Yates as a ‘tackling machine’ who led the competition in total tackles last season with 1,027 at an average of 42 per game.”
The addition of Yates will provide crucial depth and experience to Warrington’s pack, potentially serving as a safety net should young star Matty Nicholson decide to pursue opportunities in the NRL, as has been speculated. Regardless of Nicholson’s future, Warrington’s forward line will be bolstered by the arrival of Yates, who will join the likes of Paul Vaughan, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, and Zane Musgrove as the club’s overseas stars.
Yates, who came through the ranks of the Newcastle Knights in the NRL and has also had spells with Salford Red Devils and London Broncos in Super League, will link up with his new teammates in November when Warrington’s pre-season preparations commence.
