Rugby League Frontrunners Wakefield Trinity Gear Up for 2025 Season
As the 2025 rugby league season approaches, clubs both inside and outside of the Super League are already making plans for the future. One team that many expect to feature in the top flight is the Championship leaders, Wakefield Trinity.
The club has made no secret of their ambition to return to the elite competition in 2025 after a one-season absence. Wakefield Trinity is confident they will secure the necessary IMG points to earn a spot in the Super League, though the final decision will come later this year.
This confidence is reflected in their recruitment for the upcoming season. Wakefield Trinity has already secured the services of several high-profile players, including fullback Max Jowitt, wingers Lachlan Walmsley, Tom Johnstone, and Thomas Delaney, as well as centres Oliver Pratt, Jack Croft, and Noah Booth.
The club has also bolstered their forward pack, with props Mike McMeeken, Renouf Atoni, Caleb Uele, Mathieu Cozza, Luke Bain, Ky Rodwell, Isaiah Vagana, and Isaac Shaw all under contract for 2025. In the hooker position, Wakefield have Liam Hood, Liam Kay, and Harvey Smith.
In addition to these contracted players, Wakefield Trinity has already confirmed the signings of Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken on lucrative, high-profile deals for the 2025 season and beyond. The club is also thought to have secured the services of Oliver Russell from Huddersfield Giants to provide depth in the halves, alongside Mason Lino. Furthermore, Hull KR forward Matty Storton will join the club next season.
While several players remain off-contract, including Toby Boothroyd, Jay Pitts, Romain Franco, Ethan Wood, Matty Ashurst, Jermaine McGillvary, Josh Bowden, Joe Law, Iain Thornley, Will Brough, Derrell Olpherts, Thomas Doyle, and Luke Gale, Wakefield Trinity is believed to be in discussions with a number of these players, with an option in Doyle’s contract almost certain to be extended.
As it stands, Wakefield have three quota spaces left to allocate for the 2025 season, with Mason Lino, Caleb Uele, Ky Rodwell, and Renouf Atoni already under contract as overseas players.
The areas where Wakefield Trinity may look to strengthen further include the second row and the centers, with only Josh Griffin recognized as a true second-rower under contract. The club may also look to add more experienced depth on the wings, alongside Walmsley and Johnstone.
“Overall, Wakefield Trinity is making a concerted effort to position themselves for a return to the Super League in 2025, and their recruitment and planning suggest they are determined to make an impact in the top flight.”
