Uruguay’s rugby sevens star James McCubbin is pleased with his team’s progress in the HSBC Challenger Series tournament in Munich, where they have secured a spot in the quarter-finals. The team’s hard work over the past six weeks has paid off, and they are now aiming to break back into the main HSBC SVNS series.

Rugby Union News: Uruguay Sevens Star McCubbin Pleased with Team’s Progress

Uruguay’s rugby sevens ace James McCubbin expressed his delight with his team’s impressive two-from-two display that has secured their place in the quarter-finals of the HSBC Challenger Series tournament in Munich. The top four-placed men’s sevens teams in the Bavarian capital will earn spots in the promotion and relegation play-off competition at the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid.

“We are qualified for the quarterfinals. It’s the objective we had today, so we’re very happy that we achieved our goal,” McCubbin told RugbyPass pitchside.

The Uruguayan team has been training intensively for the past six weeks since the last tournament in Montevideo, and McCubbin is pleased to see the results of their efforts.

“We trained very, very hard these six weeks, and watching the results of our training, it’s quite nice, and we are finding our game.”

The ultimate aim for Uruguay is to break back into the HSBC SVNS series proper.

“That’s our objective [getting back on the HSBC SVNS circuit]. Last year it was very tough to descend and play again in the Challenger, but it’s our opportunity to go back to the series, and we are working every day for that goal,” McCubbin said.

Should Uruguay make it to Madrid, they will compete at Atletico Madrid’s stadium, which McCubbin is relishing.

“I like it, there are a lot of feelings that go with being in that stadium, so big with such great history, so it’s a big responsibility for each player that is on that field, playing and having this Uruguayan shirt.”

Depending on their performance on Day 2 in Munich, Uruguay are likely to face three out of Kenya, Chile, Hong Kong China, and Germany from the Challenger Series in the Madrid playoffs.
