Leicester Secure Victory Over Exeter Despite Wiese’s Red Card

On the final day of the Gallagher Premiership regular season, Leicester Tigers secured a comprehensive 40-22 victory over Exeter Chiefs, despite the late dismissal of departing back-rower Jasper Wiese.

The outcome at Welford Road was academic, with Sale’s victory at Saracens ensuring Exeter missed out on a place in the play-offs. Nevertheless, this was an ideal way for eighth-placed Leicester to end what has been a challenging campaign.

The Match

The match got off to a bright start for the visitors, with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso scoring the opening try after a neat offload from Dan John. However, Leicester soon hit back through Ollie Hassell-Collins and Jack van Poortvliet to take the lead.

Exeter’s chances suffered a further blow when Olly Woodburn was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle, and the hosts extended their advantage with a try from Tommy Reffell and a score from Mike Brown.

Wiese’s red card in the 68th minute was the only negative for Leicester, but Exeter were unable to capitalize, with Kieran Wilkinson’s late penalties sealing the victory for the Tigers.

“This result saw Exeter drop two places to seventh in the final Premiership standings, while Leicester will be pleased to end their challenging season on a high note.”
