South Africa’s Roller Coaster SVNS Series Campaign Ends in Disappointment
South Africa’s SVNS Series journey was marked by both highs and lows this season. The Blitzboks kicked things off with a victory in the Dubai decider back in December, putting them at the top of the standings. However, their form proved inconsistent as the season progressed, with the team struggling to maintain that early-season momentum against the world’s best.
Despite qualifying for the SVNS Series Grand Final in Madrid as one of the top eight men’s teams, South Africa’s campaign ultimately fell short of their goal. They fought hard but were unable to secure a spot in the semi-finals, failing to win any of their three pool matches.
“We played two great games, maybe three great games, and then in the quarter-finals we just seemed to lack a bit of effort or concentration. Disappointing season for us but that’s just how rugby works,” – Captain Selvyn Davids
The Blitzboks’ failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics as one of the SVNS Series sides has added to the frustration. However, the team now has one more opportunity to secure a spot at the Games, as they prepare to compete in the final Olympic Games repechage event in Monaco.
Davids remains positive about the upcoming qualifier, emphasizing the importance of a strong, focused mindset:
“Everyone wants to play in the Olympics and everyone wants to play in the biggest sporting event in the world, so for us, [it’s important] to just put this behind us and come back positive and just pick up our heads and put in the effort again.”
