South African Springbok Jasper Wiese Faces Six-Match Ban After Red Card in Final Leicester Tigers Appearance
Rugby union fans were left disappointed as South Africa’s Jasper Wiese will miss his country’s upcoming July series against Ireland. The 28-year-old No8 received a six-match ban following a red card in his final outing for Leicester Tigers.
The incident occurred in the 67th minute of the Tigers’ 40-22 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Welford Road. Referee Karl Dickson showed Wiese a red card for lifting and dropping an opposing player, Ross Vintcent, onto his head at a ruck.
An independent disciplinary panel chaired by Jeremy Summers, along with Martyn Wood and Olly Kohn, heard the case. Wiese admitted the charge, which was contrary to World Rugby Law 9.18, resulting in the six-match suspension.
The ban will see Wiese sidelined for South Africa’s upcoming fixtures, including their matches against Wales, Ireland (two tests), Portugal, and two clashes with Australia in the Rugby Championship. Provided he is released by Leicester, the Springbok will be unavailable until after July 13.
This suspension comes as a blow for both Wiese and the South African national team, as the powerful back-rower has been a key figure in their setup, earning 27 caps. The news also arrives on the same day that Wiese was named in the Gallagher Premiership team of the season for the third consecutive year, highlighting his significant impact on the club level.
Rugby union enthusiasts will have to wait until the Rugby Championship in August to see Wiese back in action for the Springboks, as he serves out the remainder of his six-match ban.
