Rugby League Standout Roberts Primed for Continued Growth at Leeds Rhinos
The Leeds Rhinos have weathered an up-and-down 2024 campaign, with a string of injuries hampering the club’s progress. Despite the challenges, the Rhinos remain firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot as they prepare for a crucial Super League showdown against St Helens this Friday.
In a boost to their backline, the Rhinos have welcomed the return of Harry Newman, who has recovered from a recent back injury. Utility player Matty Russell has also joined the squad on loan from Warrington Wolves, bolstering the Rhinos’ options. With Ash Handley also available, Leeds’ backline is nearing full strength, though long-term absentees Paul Momirovski and David Fusitu’a remain sidelined.
One player who has seized his opportunity this season is Luis Roberts. The 23-year-old, who joined the Rhinos before the 2023 campaign, has made 11 appearances in Super League, scoring three tries. His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with reports linking him to a potential move away from Headingley at the end of the season.
“We have had chats with Luis and they are ongoing as we’ve had with some other players,” Smith said. “He is certainly someone I can see staying at the club and continuing on his development.”
Smith was full of praise for Roberts’ impact this season, describing him as a positive influence on the Rhinos squad.
“He is one of those guys players like playing with because he fits in, does his job with no fuss and is a good teammate,” Smith said. “He helps others with his chat and his general footy awareness. He is a guy who, as a young kid, you’d say has had a good season for where he is at in his development.”
While Roberts has primarily played on the wing this season, Smith revealed that the club would like to explore his potential in the centres going forward.
“Luis is a better centre at this point in time and that’s something we’d like to explore more, particularly as players are more available on the wing,” Smith said.
With the Rhinos facing a crucial clash against St Helens, the return of key players and the continued development of promising talents like Luis Roberts will be crucial in their pursuit of a playoff spot in the 2024 rugby league season.
