Rugby League News: Tom Burgess Chooses Huddersfield Giants Over Super League Rivals
Tom Burgess, the experienced England front-rower, has revealed that he had “serious offers” from multiple Super League clubs, including his brother Sam’s Warrington Wolves, before ultimately deciding to sign with the Huddersfield Giants.
After a 12-year career in the NRL, Burgess will be returning to the Super League, having penned a two-year deal with the West Yorkshire outfit earlier this year. Addressing the rumours that linked him to a move to the Wire to join his brother Sam, Burgess explained that while Warrington had made a “serious offer,” the uncertainty surrounding his brother’s coaching future led him to “do his own thing.”
“Everyone was wondering why I didn’t go play for Warrington because Sam is there and that was the obvious choice,” Burgess told the Yorkshire Post. “I had serious offers from Warrington and Catalans but I had to do my own thing.”
Burgess further elaborated on his decision, stating that he has “always tried to do [his] own thing,” even when his twin brother George joined South Sydney Rabbitohs. The experienced prop acknowledged that “you never know what Sam is going to do,” hinting that the Warrington head coach’s future at the club was not entirely certain.
Despite the pull of joining his brother, Burgess revealed that his experiences playing at the John Smith’s Stadium, as well as the proximity to his hometown of Dewsbury, were key factors in his decision to sign with the Huddersfield Giants.
“It’s my hometown club,” Burgess said, highlighting the personal connection that influenced his choice.
The move to the Giants will see Burgess return to the Super League after over a decade in the NRL, where he has established himself as a formidable front-rower for the England national team. Huddersfield fans will be eager to see the experienced prop bolster their squad as they aim to build on their success in the upcoming 2025 season.
