Rugby League Update: Catalans Dragons Face Roster Overhaul as Top Stars Depart
The Catalans Dragons are bracing for a significant squad transformation ahead of the 2025 season, as several of their marquee players are set to leave the club. The team that takes the field at the start of the upcoming campaign could look vastly different from the one that reached the 2023 Super League Grand Final.
With as many as 10 players out of contract at the end of 2024, the Dragons are facing a summer of change. Confirmed departures include Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken, who will join Wakefield Trinity, while Jordan Abdull’s loan spell is coming to an end, with a move to Hull FC reportedly in the works.
The latest player confirmed to be leaving the Catalans is winger Tom Davies. The club has announced that the England international will depart Perpignan when his contract expires at the end of the 2024 season. Davies, who joined the Dragons in 2020, has been a prolific try-scorer, amassing 60 tries in 95 appearances for the club.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the club for how they’ve treated me over the last five years,” said Davies. “Steve [McNamara] brought me over, and I’ll forever be grateful for that opportunity. Bernard Guasch, all the coaches, and my teammates have made this club special to me, and I’ve loved every second.”
The departure of Davies, who has 79 tries in 136 Super League appearances, will leave a significant void in the Catalans’ backline. The club is reportedly looking to fill the vacancy, with rumors linking them to the signings of St Helens’ Tommy Makinson and NRL wingers Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Daniel Tupou.
The Dragons’ struggles to maintain their early-season pace have seen them slip back from the top of the Super League table. The ongoing roster changes could further impact their performance, but the club remains committed to its rebuilding efforts, which may include securing the services of some of the best rugby betting sites to aid their preparations for the 2025 campaign.
As the rugby league world waits to see how the Catalans Dragons will navigate this transitional period, one thing is certain: the team that takes the field next season could be vastly different from the one that finished as runners-up in 2023.
