Leigh Leopards Aim to Rebuild for 2025 Following Turbulent Season
After a tumultuous start to the 2024 season, the Leigh Leopards have turned a corner in recent weeks, both on and off the field. The club received a boost with the news that head coach Adrian Lam has signed a new contract, allowing them to focus on squad planning for the 2025 campaign.
The Leopards have been rocked by several high-profile departures, with the likes of John Asiata, Zak Hardaker, and Oliver Holmes all set to join Hull FC at the end of the season. Additionally, Tom Amone will depart for the Canterbury Bulldogs, while Kai O’Donnell has been linked with a move to the NRL. These significant losses in the pack have left the club in need of reinforcements.
However, Lam’s contract extension provides stability, and the Leigh Leopards are already scouting the transfer market to rebuild their squad for the 2025 season. Sky Sports Rugby League and BBC Rugby League have identified five potential targets that could strengthen the Leopards’ roster.
The departure of Asiata means Leigh will be actively searching for a similar profile of player, and Jack de Belin, the PNG international currently with St. George Illawarra, could fit the bill. de Belin has spoken about the possibility of a Super League move, and a switch to the Leopards could be an enticing option.
Another target is David Armstrong, the Newcastle Knights’ in-form winger, who was previously linked with a move to Leigh earlier this season. Although the deal never materialized, the Leopards retain an interest, and Armstrong’s recent NRL performances have increased the club’s desire to secure his services.
Experienced forward Ben Murdoch-Masila, a former Super League standout, is another player who could return to the league, with his contract at St. George Illawarra set to expire. His physicality and versatility would be valuable additions to the Leopards’ pack.
Additionally, the Leopards are considering bringing back former player Luis Roberts, who currently plies his trade with Leeds Rhinos. The young utility back could provide depth and flexibility to the Leigh backline.
Finally, Peter Hola, the Canberra Raiders prop, has been consistently linked with a move to Super League. With Tom Amone’s departure confirmed, Hola could be an ideal target to bolster the Leopards’ front row.
