Renowned second-row Sam Whitelock concluded his illustrious career in grand fashion, scoring the final try in Pau’s 36-24 victory over Perpignan in the Top 14 on the last day of the season.
Despite Pau failing to reach the play-offs, the legendary lock, who amassed 153 international caps for the All Blacks, ensured his retirement was marked by a memorable moment. With the game nearing its conclusion, Whitelock won the lineout ball and powered over the line, sparking jubilant celebrations from his teammates.
“When a great man like that decides these things, we can only be admiring,” said Pau head coach Sebastien Piqueronies. “He has always decided how he wants to lead his career. On Saturday, he got up and decided to be good.”
Whitelock’s try capped off a remarkable rugby union gameplay career, which included two Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2011 and 2015. The 35-year-old joined Pau after the 2023 World Cup and established himself as a regular starter, though he ultimately decided to hang up his boots to spend more time with his family.
“We were good on the defensive rucks in the first half, where we managed a lot of counter-rucks. Beka (Gorgadze) and Sam were incredible at this level,” said teammate Nathan Decron, reflecting on Whitelock’s final outing.
