Springboks Brace for Twickenham Test Showdown Without Star Wingers Kolbe and Arendse

In a significant setback for the Springboks ahead of their opening test of the year, South Africa will be without the services of star wingers Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse for the clash with Wales at Twickenham on June 22. The losses of these key players will undoubtedly be felt, but the depth of South African rugby will be put to the test as they look to kick off their 2023 international campaign on a high note.

South Africa Brace for Twickenham Test without Key Duo Kolbe and Arendse

May 23, 2023 – In a significant setback for the Springboks ahead of their opening test of the year, South Africa will be without the services of star wingers Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse for the clash with Wales at Twickenham on June 22.

Arendse, the Bulls sensation, underwent emergency surgery on Sunday after suffering a fractured cheekbone during his club duties over the weekend. While he has been ruled out of the Wales encounter, the talented back remains a possibility to feature in the highly anticipated two-test series against Ireland in July.

Adding to head coach Rassie Erasmus’ concerns, Kolbe, the double World Cup winner, has been released from the 35-player Springbok squad in Pretoria to undergo scans on a knee issue. This news will undoubtedly worry South African fans, who had been eager to see the electrifying winger in action against the Welsh.

With both Arendse and Kolbe sidelined, the Springboks’ attacking firepower out wide has taken a significant hit as they look to kick off their international season with a victory. Compounding the challenge, the June 22 match falls outside the official international window, meaning the Boks could also be without their Bulls contingent if the franchise reaches the United Rugby Championship final.

“In a positive development, the Springboks have called up uncapped Bulls back-rower Celimpilo Gumede to join the training squad, with the Pretoria-based franchise agreeing to release him despite their own crucial semi-final clash. Erasmus expressed his excitement at seeing how Gumede integrates with the squad and what he can offer in training.”

As the Springboks regroup and prepare for the Twickenham clash, the losses of Kolbe and Arendse will undoubtedly be felt, but the depth of South African rugby will be put to the test as they look to kick off their 2023 international campaign on a high note.
