Huddersfield Giants Appoint Long-Serving Andy Kelly as Director of Rugby Amid ‘Revolution’
Huddersfield, [Current Date] – In a move that signals a significant shift in the club’s hierarchy, Huddersfield Giants have announced the promotion of long-time staff member Andy Kelly to the role of Director of Rugby. This appointment is seen as the beginning of a ‘revolution’ within the organization, as detailed in the club’s official announcement.
Kelly, a former player who made over 300 appearances for the likes of Wakefield Trinity, Hull KR, England, and Yorkshire, has been associated with the Giants since 2014. Initially joining the club as Head of Youth Development, the 64-year-old has also spent nearly five years working for the RFL as a Regional Performance Coach in the North East.
A familiar face at the John Smith’s Stadium, Kelly briefly took charge of the first-team in 2016 after the departure of Paul Anderson. He will now work closely with new head coach Luke Robinson and report directly to the board of directors, as the club looks to implement a bold new vision.
Retiring from playing in 1993, Kelly has a wealth of coaching experience, having previously held the reins at Wakefield Trinity, Gateshead Thunder, Featherstone Rovers, Dewsbury Rams, and Ireland.
“I am honoured and excited to be asked to take on the role of Director of Rugby at a time of change for Huddersfield Giants,” said Kelly. “I have a very good relationship with Luke Robinson, and I am fully aligned with the values, vision, and ambition we have for the Giants.”
Robinson, who was appointed as the permanent head coach at the beginning of September, expressed his full support for Kelly’s new position. “I again thank Ken (Davy, Chairman) and the board for backing my view that this position will work well for us, and there’s definitely no one better qualified than Andy to do this,” he stated.
The Huddersfield Giants’ chairman, Ken Davy, echoed the sentiments, saying, “We are incredibly fortunate at the Giants to have someone of the calibre and experience of Andy to take on this important task, and we wish him every success in the role.”
As the ‘Robinson revolution’ takes shape, rugby league enthusiasts will be closely following the progress of Huddersfield Giants and the impact of Andy Kelly’s appointment as the club’s new Director of Rugby.
