Rugby League Pays Tribute to Club Legend Rob Burrow on Global MND Awareness Day
On June 21st, the Leeds Rhinos will take on the Leigh Leopards at Headingley Stadium, marking the club’s first home game since the passing of legendary player Rob Burrow. The occasion holds special significance, as it coincides with Global MND Awareness Day, a cause that has been central to the Rhinos’ efforts in recent years to celebrate Burrow’s life and achievements.
In collaboration with Sky Sports, the Rhinos will present a series of features aimed at raising awareness of motor neurone disease (MND), the condition that Burrow has bravely battled. The team will also don a specially designed jersey, created by Cath Muir, who was diagnosed with MND in 2014. The bold, MND-inspired colors and Muir’s artwork, including a depiction of Burrow and his friend Kevin Sinfield, will set the kit apart from the Rhinos’ usual designs.
Kit Designers Donate to MND Charity
Kit designers Oxen have made donations of £150,000 since 2020, and £10 from the sale of every commemorative shirt will be donated to the Leeds Hospitals Charity appeal to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND. This gesture underscores the club’s commitment to honoring Burrow’s legacy and supporting the MND community.
“The match promises to be a poignant moment for the Rhinos faithful, as they come together to pay tribute to one of the club’s most beloved icons.”
Leeds Rhinos’ club statement emphasized the emotional significance of the occasion, with Burrow’s former teammates returning to “mark the occasion and remember their friend as part of a special night of celebration.”
