Seasoned South African Rugby Union Talent Departs Leicester Tigers After Stellar Tenure
Jasper Wiese, the dynamic back-rower, has bid farewell to the Leicester Tigers, marking the end of his highly successful stint with the Premiership club following the 2023/24 season.
Wiese, a once little-known loose forward from the Cheetahs, has since blossomed into one of the premier number eights in the game. His hard-hitting, all-action style on both sides of the ball has made him a dominating force during his time with the Tigers.
The 28-year-old departs Leicester as a Rugby World Cup and British and Irish Lions Series winner, cementing his status as a true Springboks legend. His impressive statistics further underline his impact, with Wiese making the most carries (896), post-contact metres (1,111), and beaten defenders (259) of any Premiership player since joining the club.
Defensively, Wiese has also been a standout, ranking among the top ten players for dominant tackles in the last four seasons. Despite some early disciplinary issues, the South African powerhouse became a mainstay in the Tigers’ lineup, amassing an impressive 79 appearances and 21 tries for the club.
Wiese’s most memorable performance came in the 2022 Premiership final, where he scored a try and was named man of the match as Leicester clinched their first league title in nine years.
The towering forward was also a key figure in the Tigers’ Challenge Cup final appearance in 2021, narrowly losing to Montpellier.
As Jasper Wiese embarks on a new chapter, reportedly joining the Urayasu D-Rocks in Japan, Leicester Tigers and rugby enthusiasts alike will fondly remember his dominant and influential tenure at Welford Road.
