Rugby League Powerhouse St Helens Face Historic Losing Streak
St Helens, the reigning Super League champions, are on the brink of a historic losing streak that could see them lose ground in the race for the playoff spots. If Paul Wellens’ side are defeated by Hull FC this Saturday, it will mark their sixth consecutive league loss – the first time they have experienced such a run in over 45 years.
The Red V’s current five-game losing streak, which includes defeats to Salford Red Devils, Castleford Tigers, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, and most recently a 46-4 thumping by Leigh Leopards, has seen them slide down to 6th place in the Super League standings. Plagued by injuries, the focus for St Helens now is to secure a playoff spot by the end of the season.
Notably, the last time any St Helens side lost six league games in a row was during the 1978/79 First Division campaign, a run that spanned from March to April 1979. That dismal stretch included losses against the likes of Leeds, Hull KR, Workington Town, Wakefield Trinity, and bitter rivals Wigan.
The 1985/86 season was the only other occasion where a St Helens team lost six games across all competitions, a run that began with a semi-final defeat in the John Player Special Trophy and was followed by five consecutive league losses to the likes of Wigan, Widnes, Halifax, and Warrington.
As the current St Helens squad prepares to face Hull FC, the stakes are high. A defeat would not only extend their losing streak to six league games, but it would also mark the first time in over 38 years that the club has suffered such a prolonged slump across all competitions. The Red V faithful will be hoping their side can find a way to turn their fortunes around and avoid being written into the history books for the wrong reasons.
