Building the Perfect Rugby League Player: Wigan Warriors Captain Liam Farrell’s Choices

In a new feature coming to Love Rugby League in 2024, the publication is asking both past and present players to construct their vision of the ideal rugby league player. Focusing on five key attributes – passing, kicking, speed, tackling, and rugby IQ – the first guest to share their “Perfect Player” is Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell.

The England international, when posed with the hypothetical scenario, had some interesting choices to make. For rugby IQ, Farrell selected former teammate and current Wigan coach Lee Briers, citing the veteran’s exceptional game-planning and tactical prowess.

“The thought and detail he put into his coaching… I’m guessing that was just him relaying it on from when he was a player,” Farrell explained.

When it came to passing, the Wigan skipper went with former Cowboys fullback Matty Bowen, describing him as “one of the most skilful players I have ever played with.” For kicking, Farrell opted for ex-Wigan winger Pat Richards, highlighting the Irishman’s remarkable goal-kicking abilities and game-changing moments.

In the speed category, Farrell had a tough choice between Jai Field and Bevan French, both known for their lightning pace. Ultimately, he plumped for Field, acknowledging the Wigan flyer’s blistering top-end speed over longer distances.

Finally, for tackling, Farrell selected former teammate Tommy Leuluai, praising the Kiwi’s ferocious and uncompromising style.

“No one comes close!” Farrell exclaimed, recalling Leuluai’s legendary hits, including the infamous “Maurie Fa’asavalu tackle” that still lingers in his memory.

This unique feature provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a current rugby league star as he constructs his ideal player from the game’s top talents, both past and present.
