Cornish Pirates Eager to Showcase Talent Against Former Champions Saracens
As the Greene King IPA Championship season kicks off, Cornish Pirates joint head coach Alan Paver is excited for his team to “showcase what they are about” when they take on former Premiership and European champions Saracens at home tomorrow.
This year, the Championship has been divided into two Conference divisions, and the Pirates will face a tough challenge in their first competitive match in over a year against the visitors, who were “demoted” last season due to financial irregularities.
The Pirates warmed up for the opening day clash with a 26-13 home win over Jersey Reds, where young loanee Luke Scully from Cardiff Blues shone. However, Saracens will pose a different threat, having recorded a 47-12 victory against Coventry in their final pre-season friendly, with fly-half Manu Vunipola and winger Alex Lewington, who scored a hat-trick, in impressive form.
“Knowing that we are playing Saracens at home in our Championship opener gives us an opportunity to showcase what we are about, and it should be a very good game,” Paver stated. “I am sure our selected players will give their all and be keen and motivated to give a good account of themselves, both individually and collectively.”
The Pirates have also added young fly-half prospect Harry Bazalgette to their squad, who made his debut against the Reds, while Argentine Nicolas De Battista has been named as the club captain for the upcoming season.
With no fans allowed at Mennaye Field due to COVID-19 restrictions, Pirates supporters will be able to watch the highly anticipated rugby union encounter via the club’s new live-streaming service, which has become an essential part of the matchday experience for fans across the country.
