As the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific playoffs kick off, the Chiefs have named a formidable lineup featuring eight All Blacks to take on the Queensland Reds in a highly anticipated quarter-final rematch at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The two sides last met in last year’s playoffs, with the Chiefs emerging victorious 29-20 on their way to the final. The Reds, however, will be brimming with confidence after defeating the Chiefs earlier this season in Brisbane.

“When we play the Reds, we tend to bring out the best in each other,” said Gallagher Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan. “Both teams like to express themselves with ball in hand, and we are expecting a fast-paced and fierce encounter.”

The Chiefs’ backrow looks particularly dominant, with powerful Wallace Sititi at No. 8, captain Luke Jacobson at openside, and All Black Samipeni Finau starting at blindside. Up front, All Blacks Samisoni Taukei’aho and Tupou Vaa’i have been named to start, while Cortez Ratima partners the experienced Damian McKenzie in the halves.

A surprise selection sees Rameka Poihipi starting at second five-eighth over Quinn Tupaea, who will feature from the bench. The Chiefs’ ever-reliable back three of Shaun Stevenson, Emoni Narawa, and Etene Nanai-Seturo all start, with Daniel Rona providing utility cover.

The Reds, who have won four of their last five matches, will be a formidable opponent, and the Chiefs know they will have to be at their best to secure a place in the next round of the playoffs.
