Lions Secure Sensational 44-21 Victory Over Glasgow Warriors

In a thrilling United Rugby Championship encounter, the Lions secured a commanding 44-21 win over Glasgow Warriors, scoring more tries with 14 men than with 15 as they remained in the playoff race.

The Highveld hosts, the Lions, scored six tries on the day, with a brace from Rabz Maxwane and tries from Edwill van der Merwe, JC Pretorius, Sanele Nohamba, and Hanru Sirgel. Nohamba added four conversions and a penalty, while Jordan Hendrikse kicked a penalty.

Glasgow, despite an early lead, managed three tries through Kyle Rowe, Jonny Matthews, and Josh McKay, with George Horne kicking two conversions and Duncan Weir kicking the other.

The match was not without its challenges for the Lions, as they lost Emmanuel Tshituka to a Head Injury Assessment inside the opening 11 minutes. Ruan Venter was also sin-binned and later sent off for an infringement in the build-up to Glasgow’s first try. Francke Horn was also sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on.

“However, the Lions’ resilience shone through, as they scored four tries in a devastating 11-minute spell in the second half to take control of the match.”

Edwill van der Merwe, Rabz Maxwane, JC Pretorius, and Sanele Nohamba all crossed the line, with Nohamba adding the extras on each occasion and also landing a late penalty.

Glasgow managed a third try through Josh McKay, but replacement Hanru Sirgel claimed the sixth and final try for the Lions as they secured a fifth win in seven URC matches.

The victory keeps the Lions firmly in the playoff race, demonstrating their ability to overcome adversity and secure a convincing win over a strong opponent.
