Wigan Warriors Poised for Greatness Under Coach Matt Peet
Legendary former Wigan winger Martin Offiah believes that current head coach Matt Peet has the potential to become the greatest coach in the club’s illustrious history. This sentiment comes on the heels of Wigan’s recent clean sweep of trophies, including the Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield, and Super League title.
The Cherry and Whites capped off their remarkable season with an 18-8 victory over Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley. Offiah, who was a guest of honor at the event and presented the trophy to victorious captain Liam Farrell, was more nervous watching the game than during his playing days.
“This is an incredible time for Wigan and I have been close to the journey since 2010,” said Offiah, who now serves as a club ambassador. He believes that Peet, who took charge ahead of the 2022 campaign, is presiding over a genuine renaissance at the rugby league powerhouse.
Despite Wigan’s status as the most successful club in the British game, they have not enjoyed a sustained period of dominance in the Super League era. However, Offiah sees Peet as the latest catalyst in the club’s resurgence, following the legacies of Michael Maguire and Shaun Wane.
“Matty Peet is the latest incumbent and what he’s done in less than three years is absolutely incredible. It’s not only what he’s done but the way he’s done it with the culture he’s created,” Offiah commented. “He’s not been afraid of what’s gone on before him, he’s embraced it as Wigan have done in the past, and is now taking the club to potentially new heights.”
Offiah believes that Peet could become the greatest coach Wigan has ever had, but maintaining that level of success will be the true mark of greatness. Wigan’s CEO, Kris Radlinski, has also been praised for his role in the club’s recent resurgence, drawing comparisons to the legendary Maurice Lindsay.
With the backing of a successful businessman in owner Mike Danson, Wigan Warriors appear poised for a sustained period of dominance in the rugby league landscape. As Offiah eloquently stated, “This could just be the start of another dynasty” for the Cherry and Whites.
