At 40 years old, Bolton-born Holly Speakman is spearheading Wigan Warriors’ charge to the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, showcasing her remarkable determination and experience in the sport of rugby league.

Veteran Rugby League Star Aims for Wembley Glory at 40

In a remarkable feat, 40-year-old Bolton-born Holly Speakman is spearheading Wigan Warriors’ charge to the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The experienced forward, who joined the Warriors in 2018 – the year they won the inaugural Women’s Super League title – has now played 78 matches for the club, making her the most seasoned player in the squad.

Speakman’s journey in rugby league began after her son Brian encouraged her to take up the sport, telling her, “If you can shout at me from the side-lines at St Pat’s then you can play the game yourself!” And she’s been proving her mettle ever since.

Making History with Wigan Warriors

The veteran player has continued to make history with the Wigan Warriors Women, recently featuring in their opening Betfred Women’s Super League match at the club’s principal stadium – a proud moment for all involved, with Speakman’s family in attendance, including her young daughter Willow.

Aiming for Wembley Glory

Now, Speakman has her sights set on leading the Warriors to glory at the iconic Wembley Stadium, where the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final will be part of a Finals Day triple-header on June 8th. Standing in their way is a formidable Leeds Rhinos side, who the Warriors faced in a close semi-final clash last year.

“We all dream of playing at Wembley, but Leeds are a tough side,” Speakman acknowledged. “They’re physical and they’re well drilled. We know what we’ve got to do, and I know this time we can come away with the win.”

Wigan Warriors head coach Denis Betts has been instrumental in the team’s development, with Speakman praising his coaching expertise and the improvements he has brought to the squad, particularly for the young players coming through the ranks.

Speakman’s inspirational journey is a testament to her determination and love for the sport. As the most experienced player in the Wigan side, she is aiming to prove that life really does begin at 40 by leading her team to glory at the prestigious Wembley showpiece.

Fans can catch the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup semi-final between Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos on BBC iPlayer this Sunday, May 19th, with kick-off at 12:30 pm. General admission tickets are also available for the double-header event.
