Unbreakable Bonds: The Lifelong Friendship Between Rugby League Icons Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire
The enduring camaraderie between rugby league legends Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield has been widely celebrated, but it is Burrow’s deeper connection with Danny McGuire that truly exemplifies their lifelong journey in the sport.
From childhood rivals to championship-winning teammates, Burrow and McGuire forged an unbreakable bond that saw them guide the Leeds Rhinos to eight Super League Grand Final triumphs. This Friday, McGuire will join a host of former Rhinos stars at the iconic Headingley stadium to honor the life of his dear friend and teammate, who sadly passed away in June 2022 after a courageous battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
“The relationship Rob and I had started long before our professional careers begun,” revealed McGuire, now serving as the assistant coach for the Castleford Tigers. “We played with and against each other from the age of 10 in all the representative teams growing up. Our careers and lives were mirrored.”
The profound impact of Burrow’s devastating diagnosis in late 2019 hit his close friend McGuire hard, but the former Rhinos teammates rallied around him in a powerful display of camaraderie. In January 2020, Headingley was packed to the rafters as McGuire, Sinfield, Jamie Peacock, and other Rhinos legends turned out to support Burrow in a benefit match.
“That game, and everything else that has been done since then, particularly all the fundraising that Kev has done, is testament to the person that Rob was,” said the 41-year-old McGuire. “Rob’s story, and the tenacity he showed on a rugby league field and following his MND diagnosis, means he’s now recognized and appreciated around the entire UK and the world.”
As the Rhinos community prepares to celebrate Burrow’s life this Friday, McGuire will fondly reflect on their countless shared triumphs, including the club’s seminal 2004 title win and their 2017 Grand Final victory over Castleford – McGuire’s current team. The former teammates’ enduring bond and mutual respect will undoubtedly be at the forefront of this poignant tribute.
“We did everything together and then played our last-ever game for Leeds together against Cas, Rob’s local team, and the club I’m now coaching at,” McGuire reminisced. “That Grand Final win in 2017 was pretty crazy, and I remember daydreaming that Rob and I would lift the trophy together. To be able to share that honor, now knowing what he went through after it, makes it even more special.”
As the rugby league community gathers to celebrate the life of a true icon, the unbreakable bond between Burrow and McGuire will serve as a lasting testament to the power of friendship and the enduring spirit of the game they both loved.
