Wales Women’s Rugby Team Secure Historic World Cup Spot

On Saturday, the Wales Women’s Rugby League team secured their historic first-ever spot at the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup with an impressive 48-6 victory over the Netherlands in Purmerend. The decisive win comes after the Welsh side’s earlier World Cup-qualifying triumph against Ireland earlier this year.

Despite the high anticipation surrounding the crucial fixture, Wales wasted little time asserting their dominance, scoring their first try just two minutes into the match. The Welsh women continued to showcase their prowess, earning four first-half tries courtesy of Leanne Burnell, Brittony Price, and a brace from Seren-Gough-Walters, allowing them to head into the break with an 18-0 lead.

“We knew they would be tough. They had some great players, but our girls did everything we asked of them. I was happy with the performance today. We’re an ambitious team and this is the milestone we wanted to reach. We worked hard for each other and came through the other side. We’ve a long way to go from where we want to be right now, but our journey right now has been fantastic.”

While the Netherlands finally got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute with a brilliant effort from Sylvie Moelee, the Welsh onslaught continued. Leanne Burnell and Hannah Jones added to the tally, increasing the lead to 36 points. In a statement-making final try, captain Bethan Dainton sealed Wales’ resounding 48-6 victory.

Only making their international debut in 2019, the Wales Women’s Rugby League team have now cemented their legacy just 11 games later by securing their place in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.
