Experienced Winger Muirhead Shines as Brumbies Clinch Semi-final Spot in Super Rugby Pacific
Canberra, June 8, 2024 – In a thrilling Super Rugby Pacific clash, the Brumbies secured the final semi-final berth with a 32-16 victory over the Highlanders at GIO Stadium on Saturday. Veteran winger Andy Muirhead was the standout performer, showcasing his skill and composure in a crucial try-scoring contribution.
Trailing 22-16 in the 47th minute, the Brumbies launched an attack in the Highlanders’ half, with fly-half Noah Lolesio delivering a cross-field kick. Muirhead gave chase, and with the ball slightly ahead of him, opted for a football-style boot ahead. Undeterred by the presence of Highlanders fly-half Cameron Millar, Muirhead continued to dribble the ball before regathering and crossing for a well-deserved try, extending his team’s lead.
The Brumbies Dominate
The Brumbies were full value for their victory, dominating possession and territory for large periods of the match. Muirhead and hooker Billy Pollard scored two tries each, while Lolesio added a 12-point haul through his kicking. For the Highlanders, Jona Nareki scored the lone try, with Millar contributing a conversion and three penalties.
The victory not only secures the Brumbies a spot in the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals, but it also sees them join the Hurricanes, Blues, and Chiefs as the four teams progressing to the next stage of the competition.
The Highlanders held a slight edge early on, with Millar opening the scoring through a penalty. However, the Brumbies responded with a brilliant team try, finished off by Muirhead, to take a 7-3 lead. The visitors regained the advantage through two more Millar penalties, but the Brumbies regained the lead before the break when Pollard crossed for his first try.
Muirhead’s Moment of Magic
After the interval, Pollard scored his second try, and Muirhead’s moment of magic extended the Brumbies’ lead to 29-16. The home side then weathered a late Highlanders surge to clinch a well-deserved victory and secure their place in the semi-finals.
