Super Rugby Pacific Approaches Finale, Shaping National Team Selections
As the Super Rugby Pacific competition reaches its final regular season rounds, the selection picture for the national sides is starting to take shape. BBC Sport takes a closer look, with a weekly “Razor Watch” on who Scott Robertson might be considering for the All Blacks based on player form in the tournament.
The Prodigy Produces Again
Rising star Peter Lakai made an immediate impact off the bench against Moana Pasifika, scoring a charge-down try shortly after taking the field. Lakai’s work rate, game awareness, and skill set make him a valuable asset, and he will surely be in the mix for an All Blacks call-up in the near future.
Classy Chiefs Impress
Damian McKenzie once again ran the show for the Chiefs, underlining his status as the best 10 currently based in New Zealand. While Robertson may prefer Richie Mo’unga, it seems time to give McKenzie the run he deserves. His halfback partner, Cortez Ratima, was also brilliant and could be an option given the injury concerns at nine.
The Chiefs’ center pairing of Anton Lienert-Brown and Quinn Tupaea were in red-hot form, emphasizing the depth New Zealand possesses in the midfield. Both players are regaining the form to step back into Test rugby.
In the pack, Tupou Vaa’i’s maturity as a quality second-row continues, and he will surely be in the All Blacks squad. Samisoni Taukei’aho’s solid performances at hooker also make him a safe bet for selection.
Caleb Clarke’s Resurgence
Over the past couple of rounds, Caleb Clarke has seen a consistent upturn in form, scoring and assisting a try this weekend. His strength and pace offer something different to the All Blacks’ free-running wings, making him a shoo-in for another call-up.
Dalton Papali’i is also looking outstanding and could be poised to step up into a starting role, depending on Robertson’s plans for the number eight position. Akira Ioane may also have a chance to sneak into the All Blacks squad, with Shannon Frizzell’s departure leaving the six jersey relatively open.
Finally, Ofa Tu’ungafasi’s brilliant performance for the Blues will have him hoping to add to his All Blacks caps, presenting himself as a safe option for the new coach.
