EXETER CHIEF MATT POSTLETHWAITE FORCED TO RETIRE AT 27 DUE TO INJURY

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Exeter Chiefs lock/flanker Matt Postlethwaite has been compelled to retire from professional rugby at the young age of 27 due to a persistent injury. The Yorkshireman made only three competitive appearances for the Chiefs at the start of the current season, all in the Premiership Cup, before succumbing to the debilitating effects of a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Postlethwaite, who joined the Chiefs in the summer of 2023 after a successful stint with Sale Sharks, had initially made a strong impression, scoring a try on his debut in the team’s 75-0 thrashing of Bristol in September. However, his appearance off the bench against Bath in October proved to be the last time the burly forward would grace the pitch in an Exeter Chiefs jersey.

Reflecting on Retirement

“This is not how I would have wanted my time in the sport to come to an end, but I’ve loved every minute of my time at Exeter Chiefs.”

The talented player acknowledged the unwavering support he received from the club and his family during this challenging period.

“The help they have also given me off the field has been invaluable,” Postlethwaite said, while expressing his gratitude to Rob Baxter and the entire Exeter Chiefs staff for the opportunity to be a part of the team.

Despite the abrupt end to his playing career, the 27-year-old revealed that he plans to remain in Devon with his family, further cementing his connection to the club and the region.

As Postlethwaite bids farewell to the sport he loves, he wishes his former teammates the best for the future, expressing his confidence in the continued success of the Exeter Chiefs.
