Springboks Unveil Evolved Attacking Gameplan in Win Over Ireland

The South African Springboks emerged victorious over Ireland 27-20 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, showcasing an evolved attacking strategy under the guidance of new coaching addition Tony Brown.

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus was pleased to see his side’s first win over Ireland since 2016, with the team scoring two tries, earning a penalty try, and accumulating points through the boot of Handre Pollard.

While the Springboks relied on the same foundational approach that secured their 2023 Rugby World Cup triumph, Erasmus revealed a conscious effort to integrate a more expansive style of play. This shift in attacking gameplay was evident in Kurt-Lee Arendse’s early try, which demonstrated the new attacking principles implemented by Brown.

“I hope you can see we’re trying to develop our attacking game with the foundation that Felix (Jones) laid. With Tony (Brown) we’re trying to step up a little in certain areas and with that comes mistakes and lack of cohesion,” Erasmus acknowledged, aware that the experimentation will involve a learning curve.

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi echoed his coach’s sentiments, expressing enthusiasm for the team’s evolving attacking approach under Brown’s guidance.

“I’m really enjoying the way coach Tony is getting the team to attack as a group so I really enjoyed getting the ball in my hand today. We’re going to get better each week; we are still learning what coach Tony wants us to do but it is only going to get better,” Kolisi said.

Looking ahead, Erasmus expects Ireland to closely analyze the Springboks’ new tactics and make necessary adjustments for the second test. The head coach also noted that his side needs to thoroughly review Ireland’s defensive system, which proved challenging to break down at times during the match.

As the rugby union season progresses, fans can expect to see the Springboks continue to refine and expand their attacking gameplay, building on the foundation laid in their World Cup triumph and embracing the innovative influence of new coaching addition Tony Brown.
