The Springboks’ first Test match of the year is almost upon us as the back-to-back World Cup champions prepare to clash with Wales at the iconic Twickenham Stadium.

With the match taking place on the same day as the United Rugby Championship (URC) final and outside of World Rugby’s official international window, Bok boss Rassie Erasmus has several players unavailable. However, this presents an opportunity for in-form talents to earn their place in the squad.

Erasmus has the chance to blood a youthful lineup, acknowledging the need for an injection of fresh faces. BBC Sport rugby union analyzes the predicted Springboks matchday 23 that Erasmus is likely to select to take on Warren Gatland’s Wales.

At fullback, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu could be given the nod, with the talented youngster looking to adapt to the Test arena after shining for the Stormers. On the wings, Edwill van der Merwe and experienced campaigner Makazole Mapimpi are tipped to start, with the injured Cheslin Kolbe unavailable.

In the midfield, the experienced Jesse Kriel is expected to don the number 13 jersey, while Damian de Allende and Andre Esterhuizen battle it out for the 12 position. Manie Libbok is likely to steer the ship at flyhalf, with the in-form Faf de Klerk returning at scrumhalf.

The forward pack sees a blend of experienced heads and youthful talent. Evan Roos is predicted to start at number 8, with the Stormers standout joined by the likes of Pieter-Steph du Toit, Phepsi Buthelezi, and Eben Etzebeth in the pack. Up front, Malcolm Marx is set to spearhead the Bok effort, with Neethling Fouche and Ntuthuko Mchunu providing the muscle.

The Springboks’ bench will offer additional options, with the likes of Bongi Mbonambi, Ox Nche, and Salmaan Moerat providing forward cover, while Grant Williams and Siya Masuku offer backline depth.

“This clash against Wales presents an exciting opportunity for the Boks to blood a new generation of talent, while also calling upon experienced heads to guide the young guns. Fans can expect an enthralling encounter as the Springboks aim to kick off their 2023 campaign on a high note.”
