BBC Rugby Union: Springbok Star Kolbe Sidelined for Wales Clash

In a blow to South Africa’s upcoming international fixtures, double World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe has been ruled out of the Springboks’ Twickenham showdown against Wales on June 22. The dynamic winger sustained a knee injury during the Japanese league season with his club side, Tokyo-based Suntory Sungoliath.

According to a statement from SA Rugby, Kolbe was released from the national team camp on Monday to seek a specialist opinion after consultations with the Springboks’ medical staff on Sunday. The versatile back has since returned to the squad and will undergo a rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the Bok medical team, with the possibility of being available for selection for the opening Test against Ireland on July 6.

Kolbe, renowned as one of the quickest and most lethal finishers in world rugby, will be a significant absence for the two-time defending Rugby World Cup champions as they prepare to face Wales and then embark on a two-Test series against Ireland. The Springboks will be eager to have their prized asset back in action as they seek to maintain their impressive form leading up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
