Legendary USA rugby sevens star Perry Baker, a two-time World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has suggested he may reconsider his previously announced retirement plans following a standout display in a crucial match against Germany.
Baker, who is set to turn 38 in June, had been widely reported to be hanging up his boots after the upcoming Olympics in Paris. However, after scoring a hat-trick in the USA’s 40-19 win over Germany in Madrid on Friday, the prolific try-scorer hinted at a potential change of heart.
“I might keep going and go to Hong Kong or LA again and then retire after that tournament,” Baker told RugbyPass, adding a smile. “Who knows?”
The veteran winger, known as “The Speedstick” for his electrifying pace, has been a trailblazer for American rugby, amassing over 280 tries since his debut on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in the 2014/15 season. Despite a slow start against Germany, with the underdogs taking an early 12-0 lead, Baker ignited the USA’s comeback, scoring two quick tries in the first half to put his team ahead. “A win is a win, man. It’s always good to get a W no matter how it went,” Baker said, reflecting on the match. “We know we’ve got a big game next one so we’ve got to come out and try and fight hard to get another win.”
