Scotland’s Second-String Side Claim Convincing Win over Canada in Ottawa
In their opening match of the mid-year Americas tour, a Scotland team missing several Six Nations regulars secured a comfortable 73-12 victory over Canada at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa on Saturday.
Head coach Gregor Townsend utilized this tour as an opportunity to evaluate fringe players pushing for more regular international selection. The Scottish side’s dominance was reflected in an 11-try performance, with Josh Bayliss, Dylan Richardson (2), Aaron Reed (2), Gus Warr (2), Harry Paterson, Jamie Dobie, Stafford McDowall, and Kyle Steyn all crossing the whitewash.
Canada’s lone tries came from Lucas Rumball and Kyle Baillie, but the hosts struggled to contain Scotland’s attacking flair as the visitors claimed the Douglas JL Horn Memorial Trophy.
The opening exchanges saw Canada camped inside the Scottish 22, and they were rewarded when Rumball burst over following a driving maul. However, Scotland responded swiftly, with Paterson setting up Bayliss for the equalizing try.
Richardson, Reed, and Warr all scored debut tries, while Paterson, Dobie, and McDowall also found their way to the try line as Scotland’s dominance grew. The Scots breached the 50-point mark late in the second half, with Steyn rounding off the scoring.
Next up for Scotland is a clash with the USA on Friday in Washington, before facing Chile in Santiago (July 20) and Uruguay in Montevideo (July 27).
