Sky Sports Pundit Hails Salford’s Sneyd as ‘Man of Steel Elect’ in Standout 2024 Super League Season

Sky Sports analyst Jon Wells believes Salford Red Devils half-back Marc Sneyd is the frontrunner for the coveted ‘Man of Steel’ award as the 2024 Super League season reaches its midpoint, though he acknowledges several other stars are also shining brightly.

Speaking exclusively to Love Rugby League, Wells praised Sneyd’s standout performances, stating the 33-year-old is “looking like the Man of Steel elect at present” and that his displays have been truly impressive.

“The 2024 season has also seen some players in career-best form. Marc Sneyd, at 33 years of age, is looking like the Man of Steel elect at present – and his performances continue to really impress.”

However, the pundit highlighted other Super League stars who have caught his eye, including Warrington Wolves fullback Matt Dufty. Wells lauded Dufty’s blistering pace, elusive running, and improved work rate and defensive contributions.

“So too Matt Dufty at the Warrington Wolves; we always knew he was fast, that he could beat men and was devastating in broken field. What we know a little more now is of his durability.”

Wells also praised a number of other overseas and domestic players thriving in 2024, including Peta Hiku, Matt Moylan, Cain Robb, Sam Wood, and Niall Evalds. Additionally, he highlighted a crop of young talents, such as Lewis Martin, Logan Moy, Denise Balmforth, Jack Farrimond, and Riley Lumb, as players to watch in the second half of the season.

As the race for the playoffs intensifies, Wells expressed his hope that the discussion would center around the on-field action in Super League, rather than the ongoing debates around the IMG grading system. He advocated for the league to further embrace the “sport as spectacle” philosophy of the NRL, including features like referee microphones and the Captain’s Challenge.

Overall, Wells’ analysis shines a spotlight on the wealth of talent on display in the 2024 Super League campaign, with Salford’s Sneyd emerging as the standout candidate for the prestigious Man of Steel award.
