Rugby League Experts Hail Salford Red Devils as ‘Legitimate Challengers’ in Super League 2024
Sky Sports pundit Jon Wells has lauded Salford Red Devils as “legitimate challengers” to the elite clubs in the 2024 Super League season. The rugby league expert believes the Red Devils are being unfairly overlooked despite their impressive progress under head coach Paul Rowley.
Salford have consistently been among the top contenders in the Super League in recent years, often defying expectations as the “outsiders” or “surprise package.” However, Wells now argues it’s time to give the Red Devils the proper respect they deserve.
“For years now we have characterised every seasonal iteration of the Red Devils as made up of those players other teams had passed on,” Wells told Love Rugby League. “But what others have perceived as a weakness they have made their strength. The players clearly enjoy one another’s company, they are very well coached, and they are a club that have an uncanny knack of finding round pegs for round holes.”
The Sky Sports pundit, who previously labelled Salford as “disruptors” in 2023, has now elevated his assessment, suggesting they are legitimate title contenders. “I would call them legitimate challengers in 2024 to the established elite,” he stated. “Now, a lot can happen in the remaining half of the season, and clearly an injury to a player like Marc Sneyd would be disastrous for them, but I admire and respect what they are doing at the moment.”
Wells also offered his thoughts on the fortunes of the Catalans Dragons, who have struggled to match their previous success in the 2024 Super League campaign. The rugby league expert believes the French outfit’s away form has been a significant setback, questioning whether they will be able to compete in the upcoming semi-finals.
With Salford Red Devils continuing to defy the odds and establish themselves as genuine title contenders, rugby league enthusiasts will be keeping a close eye on their progress in the second half of the Super League season.
