Experienced Referees Appointed for 2024 European Club Rugby Finals
On Wednesday, the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) announced the match officials for the prestigious 2024 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup finals. Experienced English referee Matthew Carley has been appointed to take charge of the highly anticipated Champions Cup final between Leinster and Toulouse at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 25.
While there had been suggestions that fellow English official Luke Pearce should be entrusted with the responsibility, EPCR’s head of match officials, Tony Spreadbury, has determined that Carley, who most recently refereed the Champions Cup round of 16 match between the Stormers and La Rochelle, is the best fit for the occasion.
Carley will be making his EPCR final debut, with his assistants being:
- Karl Dickson (England)
- Andrea Piardi (Italy)
Ian Tempest (England) will serve as the Television Match Official (TMO), and Stefano Marrama (Italy) will be the match citing commissioner.
In the EPCR Challenge Cup final the previous evening (May 24) at the same venue, French referee Mathieu Raynal, who is set to retire at the end of the season, will oversee the match between Gloucester and the Hollywoodbets Sharks. Raynal’s assistants will be:
Eric Gauzins (France) will be the TMO, and Ed Kenny (Ireland) will serve as the citing commissioner.
The appointment of these experienced officials underscores the significance of the two European club rugby showpiece events, as the sport’s top teams compete for the prestigious Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup titles.
