Rugby League Veteran Iain Thornley Joins Oldham for 2025 Campaign
Championship newcomers Oldham have secured the services of experienced rugby league star Iain Thornley on a two-year deal following his departure from Wakefield Trinity. The 33-year-old centre brings a wealth of expertise and trophy-winning pedigree to the club as they prepare for their return to the second tier.
Thornley, a one-time Super League Grand Final winner and two-time Challenge Cup champion, was instrumental in Wakefield’s clean sweep of the Championship Grand Final, League Leaders’ Shield, and 1895 Cup in 2024, scoring seven tries in 24 appearances. His addition to the Oldham squad will undoubtedly bolster their ranks with his proven track record of success.
The towering 6ft 6in outside-back’s resume includes helping his hometown Wigan Warriors clinch a Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2013, as well as being part of the Catalans Dragons team that lifted the Challenge Cup in Tottenham in 2022. Oldham coach Sean Long is confident that Thornley’s winning mentality and work ethic will be invaluable assets as the club aims to make its mark in the 2025 Championship season.
“Iain has won a lot and is a winner,” said Long. “I want a winning culture and winning mentality with good people who want to work hard and put the team first, and he fits that.”
Thornley, who has amassed over 200 appearances across his illustrious career, including spells with Hull KR, Catalans, and Leigh, expressed his excitement at joining the Oldham project.
“I want to be part of clubs that have ambitions,” said Thornley. “Oldham want to do something similar [to Wakefield], it will be stepping stones each year but hopefully we can have a good year next year.”
With the addition of experienced duo Adam Milner and Gil Dudson, Oldham have bolstered their squad considerably as they look to make a strong impact in the 2025 rugby league season. The arrival of Iain Thornley further strengthens their roster and signals their intent to be a force to be reckoned with in the Championship.
