Debutant Ruby Nicholas Shines on HSBC SVNS Series Debut
Teenage rugby union sensation Ruby Nicholas has made a remarkable impression on the HSBC SVNS Series, delivering a standout performance during her international debut at the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens tournament last month.
The 19-year-old Aussie was a late call-up to the star-studded Australian squad after an injury to Heidi Dennis, but she wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. Nicholas scored her first try on the Series with a thrilling runaway effort at Hong Kong Stadium, capping off a dream debut for the rising star.
“It was a dream come true to wear the coveted gold jersey on the international stage,” remarked Nicholas, who had idolized Aussie captain Charlotte Caslick growing up. “I was just trying to soak in the experience and have fun out there.”
Despite Australia’s narrow defeat in the Cup final, Nicholas continued to impress in the subsequent Singapore Sevens, using her impact off the bench to contribute vital tries and assists. Coach Tim Walsh praised the young prodigy’s resilience, noting that he wanted his inexperienced players to “have fun and give it a go” as they gear up for the Olympics.
With the Grand Final in Madrid and the Paris Olympics on the horizon, Nicholas is brimming with confidence and excitement, ready to take on the world’s best. “I’m not as scared anymore,” she said. “I can just take it all in and enjoy the experience.”
The future looks bright for this rising rugby union star, as the HSBC SVNS Series and the Olympic stage await her next captivating performance.
